Why are we interested in sharing this information?
Long before my partner and I started our business in 1991, I had spent most of my life working with the Red Cross at the scene of hundreds of disasters large and small. While being involved with a major disaster is a once in a life-time experience for most people it was a regular part of my life. Where most people see random events and confusion, I found predictable patterns and a rhythm to how a disaster starts, works.
At Red Cross we would try to groom up new leaders with mixed results. A few leaders would do well and others that we had high hopes for would be complete failures. I would talk to other veteran disaster professionals about teaching some trick or short cuts to new leaders and I would tend to here the same old speech that you really couldn't do anything but give them years of experience and paying your dues. there was no thought to giving tips for success or preparing them.
While I was a completely devoted to working with ARC and believed in the goals and help these volunteers provide, I thought their must be a way to teach people to work better in disasters or high stress incidents.
